An Aha moment!

Today I had a funny moment when I realized that some of my students actually are learning in my room! What a concept! I have been teaching different prefixes and suffixes. One of the prefixes I have taught is "un" which means not, or the opposite. I guess it's starting to sink in. Today, I was removing staples from the wall using a staple remover. Apparently, some students had never seen a staple remover before. So when they saw the staple remover, someone asked, "What is that?" Another kid replied, "It's an un-stapler!"

Can you pass the salt, please?

Salt.

Thought about it much? It's quite the additive! People put salt on lots of things: meat, potatoes, nacho chips, watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers. A co-worker of mine even puts salt on his celery!

But salt, in and of itself, doesn't really have any flavor. In fact, the purpose of salt is to enhance the residual flavor of the food. It's like an assist in basketball...you don't get credit for the basket, but everyone acknowledges that the points wouldn't have happened without your help. Salt is that guy.

But there's a fine line between salty and too salty. And as great as salt is, just a grain too much, can ruin the whole dish. And unfortunately, most times we don't realize it's too salty until it's too late! The very thing that enhances flavor can become its own worst enemy!

So, what's salt have to do with a hill of beans? Other than the fact you may want to as"salt" them?

In Matthew 5:13 we are described as the salt of the earth. I don't claim to understand what that means completely. But I like to think that my purpose is like that of salt...to come along people and bring out their best.
